Topshop

Ivy Park launched in Topshop, Central last week amongst a buzz of lovely Topshop staff, press, bloggers, key influencers and models. The Topshop X Beyonce collaboration activewear flew off the shelves while DJ Eve Special had everybody happily bopping while they were shopping! The idea behind the collection is that the pieces are made of high performance technical and comfortable material but the pieces also looks cool enough you can rock up to meet your buddies for a coffee or juice after your workout! We served juices thoughout the launch day and for every Ivy Park item purchased, Topshop customers received a free Genie juice. Beyonce ethos for her new collection is ‘stay strong, healthy and happy’, which sounds pretty good to us! Go Team Girls!

Yatim, Forest Guardian

‘I live in Wehea and I’m a Petkuq Mehuey, which means Forest Guardian. I camp in the forest for months, and I collect data on the animals I see. My favorite animal is the orangutan; they are so interesting to watch because they are so much like humans. I am helping to protect Wehea because I love the forest and I want my kids to have the chance to see orangutans too.

herlina-hartanto-339x346

Dr. Herlina Hartanto,Forest Program Director,The Nature Conservancy

‘Understanding the challenges that orangutans are facing, the Conservancy’s Indonesia Terrestrial Program sets an ambitious goal of protecting and improving management across 10 million hectares of forests — the orangutan’s forest — by 2020. We will do this by working with forest guardians — communities, companies, non-governmental organizations and all levels of governments to:

  • protect the areas of the orangutan’s forest that are most critical to wildlife and people;
  • transform the way government and companies support and manage the orangutan’s forest; and
  • inspire the people of Indonesia, and all of us, to safeguard the orangutan’s forest and our future.’

TRICK OR TREAT

Who dosen’t love pie, especially a healthy homemade version? Check out this festive pumpkin pie recipe, just in time for your visiting Halloween ghosts and goblins!

Serves 8 (makes a 9-inch Pie)

Ingredients

Pie Crust:
1 cup raw walnut halves
1 cup raw pecan nuts
1 tbsp maple syrup
3 tbsp of coconut oil, melted
3 tbsp buckwheat flour

Pumpkin Pie filling:
2 cups homemade pureed pumpkin
3 eggs + 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
½ tsp fresh ginger, grated
2 tbsp raw honey
2 tbsp maple syrup
½ cup almond or rice milk

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 175C/350F.
2. Place the walnuts and pecan nuts in a food processor and process until coarsely ground. Add the maple syrup, coconut oil and buckwheat flour and pulse until the mixture is well combined and comes together to form a crumble.
3. Place the mixture into a greased 9-inch pie pan and press the crust into the bottom and sides of the pie pan. Pierce the base of the crust with a fork, every ½ inch or so to prevent the crust from rising up as it cooks.
4. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the crust is just starting to brown. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for about 5 minutes.
5. While the crust is baking prepare the pie filling. Add all the ingredients together in a large bowl and mix until well combined.
6. Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust and smooth the filling out evenly with a spatula. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the filling has set and the crust is nicely browned.
7. Leave to cool slightly on a wire rack and serve warm or at room temperature.

  1. Tell us a little bit about your sporting background and how you got into Ultras!

At University I used to play touch football (non-contact rugby) quite competitively. When I moved to Hong Kong 5 years ago I missed the intensity of competition, being outdoors and the sense of community. Eventually I discovered the abundance of trails and the regularity of competition here and became hooked.

After running in a few races over the first year, I decided to sign up for my first 100km ultra the following year, the Vibram HK 100. At that stage I’d never run more than 26km in my life. I raised money for my own charity project, RunRaeRun (which gets underprivileged HK teens into the outdoors for a 3 day adventure camp. That was three years ago.

Since then I’ve run six 100km ultras, three 100km multi-stage ultras, numerous 50km races, a 70km race and several shorter races. My best performace was placing 6th female in the Vibram HK 100 last year in 14:47 minutes.

I love the freedom I get when running on trails. Down some of the hills it feels like you’re flying. I love the intensity of hammering along rocky trails where a wrong step can see you roll your ankle – it’s actually quite mentally challenging. I’ve now completed in races in Australia, Nepal, Vietnam, the States, China and Europe- I love how it takes me around the world too. There’s also a huge emotional and spiritual side to the sport. Because it demands so much of you, you really have to be kind to your body and aware of everything that’s going on in every moment. It forces you to be present, requires you to be incredibly patience and every run always leaves me humbled and grateful.

  1. How do you incorporate cleansing into your training program and what benefits do you think it brings you as an athlete?

I started cleansing about two years ago. I found that during the cleansing process, once your body has worked its way through your stored energy, it switches to burning fat – an abundant source of energy!! This is exactly what happens when you go on long runs. While it’s important to be properly fuelled before a race (i.e not a good idea to cleanse the week before a race), I find a cleanse in the weeks leading up to a race not only cleans out your system (kind of like tuning a car), but also gets your body more efficient at burning fat – an essential skill that it needs for ultras.

In the week before an ultra when I’m trying to stock up on as much nutrients and carbohydrates as possible, I find the juices are a great way to supplement my diet.

  1. What’s your favourite Genie Juice(s) and why?

I love Garden Gnome as it tastes so scrumptious and I love the coconutty taste of Hawaii H20. But when I’m trying to cram in as much green as possible, nothing beats Sawadekah
